Canmore is the first major center you arrive at when driving into the Canadian Rockies from the Calgary International Airport. Once you depart the airport, you can expect to arrive in this idyllic mountain town in just over an hour. Have you dreamed of a road trip through the Rocky Mountains, exploring natural wonders, mountains, lakes, and cultures? Then Canmore is the perfect mountain town for you. Lay just outside of Banff National Park, a short 20-minute drive from the Town of Banff.
The early morning light casts a soft glow on the dark water. Across the lake, the mountains stand stark and impressive against the sky. A lone deer is drinking at the shoreline, and you can hear the faint tapping of a woodpecker somewhere in the woods. A shuffling noise behind alerts you to a herd of majestic bighorn sheep watching you inquisitively. Nature is coming alive around you and you’re happy you woke early to experience it. What to do
Here are some places you can easily reach from Canmore during a day trip.
It's not recommended to do the Icefield parkway in one day go and come back, you better go one way and stay a couple of nights in Jasper, and on the way back in Canmore, Lake Louise or Banff are great options to explore Banff national park.
Banff
Only 20-minute drive from Canmore, Banff is a lovely town in Banff National Park. Plan your visit during the least busy hours in the morning or later in the evening. The town has many cozy restaurants and shops
Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka is a large glacial lake five kilometers from the town of Banff. It is a beautiful spot, popular for picnicking, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, diving, and snowshoeing. In the summer months, it’s a fantastic place to relax by the water, with picnic tables and a cooking shelter as well as a small café.
Lake Louise
A 60-minute drive from Canmore, Lake Louise offers stunning hikes, a canoe dock, and a sightseeing gondola ride. The Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House trail is our favorite hike.
Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake is a glacially-fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 km outside the Village of Lake Louise. The parking lot is usually full by 6/7 am, using the Parks Canada shuttle service is recommended. The Rockpile trail offers the best view of the lake, but there are longer and more strenuous hikes to choose from.
Peyto Lake
One of the most beautiful lakes in the world, glacier-fed Peyto Lake is only a 90-minute drive from Canmore and a very popular sight along the Icefields Parkway, so be prepared for crowds.
Athabasca Glacier is one of the six major outlet glaciers of the Columbia Icefield. There are four great options to explore the glacier.
Hike the Wilcox Pass trail to a breathtaking viewpoint, just 2 km from the trailhead (1.2 mi). Wilcox Pass is unforgettable during sunset, but be prepared to gain some elevation on your way. Another great option is Athabasca Glacier Ice-walk Adventure. Certified guides are eager to share all there is to know about glaciers in the Canadian Rockies. Toe of the Athabasca Glacier is a short 2 km (1.2 mi) trail that offers an opportunity for the average person in good health to hike right up to the toe of a glacier and see crevasses from a distance. Columbia Icefield Glacier Adventure. Here, you’ll travel on a massive Ice Explorer to a place where you can walk on, feel and drink from the Athabasca Glacier.
Emerald Lake
Emerald Lake is located in Yoho National Park. It is the premier attraction in a secluded setting but can be easily accessed from the Trans Canada Highway. Canoe rental is a peaceful way to enjoy the lake, and there is a variety of hiking trails to choose from.
Takakkaw Falls
Takakkaw Falls is a waterfall located in Yoho National Park. The falls have a total height of 373 meters, making it the 2nd tallest waterfall in Canada. Visitors have to wait until late June before the access road opens.
Johnston Canyon
The trail to the waterfalls of Johnston Canyon has to be the busiest in the Canadian Rockies. Nearly every day throughout the summer, hundreds of hikers follow its canyon-clinging catwalks and cliff-mounting staircases to the gorge's Lower and Upper Falls. While the canyon and its unique trail are certainly worthy of a visit, you'll have to do the hike in the evening or very early in the morning to avoid the hordes.

Wat te doen
Hieronder een aantal plaatsen welke makkelijk te bereiken zijn vanaf Canmore.
Het is niet aan te raden om de Icefield parkway in een dag te doen, het beste is een kant op te rijden en in Jasper een aantal nachten te verblijven, terug weg kan je dan in Canmore, Lake Louise of Banff verblijven en zijn geweldige opties om het nationale park van Banff te verkennen.
Banff
Banff ligt op slechts 20 minuten rijden van Canmore en is een mooie stad in het nationale park van Banff. Plan uw bezoek tijdens de minst drukke uren in de ochtend of later in de avond. De stad heeft veel gezellige restaurants en winkels
Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka is een groot gletsjermeer vijf kilometer van het centrum van Banff. Het is een prachtige plek, populair voor picknicken, mountain biking, wandelen, kanoën, duiken, en sneeuwschoenwandelen. Moraine Lake

Johnston Canyon
Het pad naar de watervallen van Johnston Canyon is het drukste in de Canadese Rockies. Het is aan te bevelen een bezoek in de avond of ochten te plannen.
