Voor iedere strandliefhebber is Curaçao écht een droomeiland. Hotels van Luxe tot knusse Boetiek hotels, van luxe restaurants tot Street food Curaçao heeft alles voor een onvergetelijke vakantie. Je hebt er supermooie stranden, leuke Beach clubs en fantastisch plekken om te eten en cocktails te drinken bij een mooiste sunset. We wilden Curaçao altijd al een keer verkennen omdat we er zo vaak enthousiaste verhalen over hadden gehoord. Zodra je het vliegtuig uitstapt valt er een warme deken over je heen, zo warm. Dit is echt een tropisch paradijs je merkt al vanaf het eerste moment op Curaçao dat alles hier een stuk relaxter gaat. Curaçao is niet groot, in 1,5 uur rijd je van het westen naar het oosten. Maar om de mooie strandjes bij Westpunt te bereiken heb je al gouw wel een uur nodig als je vanaf Willemstad rijdt.
Het eiland Curaçao verken je het beste met de auto. Zonder huurauto, kom je niet op de mooiste plekjes en baaitjes het natuurlijkpark Christoffelpark of de tropische stranden bij Westpunt. We huurden vooraf een auto op Expedia gelijk met ons ticket en vonden de prijs erg meevallen voor 10 dagen betaalden we 180 euro en ze probeerden ons niet eens een extra verzekering aan te smeren dit is in sommige Europese landen wel anders waar ze gewoon boos worden als je geen extra verzekering wil omdat het al in je reisverzekering gedekt is eventuele schade of eigen risico.
Op Curaçao is de temp het hele jaar door tussen de 28 en 35 graden en ’s nachts koelt het maar een beetje af. Gelukkig waait het ook veel, dus het voelt wel iets minder warm aan dan het is. Heerlijk vind ik dat, vooral op het strand! Oh en ook belangrijk neem veel zonnebrand mee, factor 50. Dat is veel maar het is echt nodig op het eiland. De zon is er ontzettend fel, blijven smeren dus ook bij bewolkte dagen, je denkt het is bewolkt en ik heb al een beetje kleur maar forget het avonds ben je een gefrituurde garnaal als je niet smeert en blijft smeren. Als ik morgens voor het ontbijt me insmeerde viel meestal de schade avonds mee.
Het eiland Curaçao bereik je gemakkelijk met direct vluchten vanaf Amsterdam met KLM of Tui, vanaf Amerika landen er ook veel vluchten ook kan je de omringende eilanden makkelijk in een half uurtje bereiken met Divi air als je bijvoorbeeld je trip wil combineren met Aruba of Bonaire vanaf Aruba gaan ook weer directe vluchten terug naar Nederland.
Het leukste op Curaçao vonden we al de leuke strandjes rond Westpunt en als we even niets toe doen hadden gingen we aan het eind van de middag als het niet meer zo warm is door Willemstad struinen. Langs de handelskade en de pontjesbrug is altijd wel iets leuks te zien
Een plek waar je bijna altijd Flamingo’s kunt spotten is Sint Willibrordus, vlakbij Karakter. Navigeer op Landhuis Jan Kock. Je kunt op twee plekken flamingo’s zien op Curaçao: bij de Sint Michielsbaai en bij de zoutpannen van Jan Kok, ook wel de saliña van Rif-Sint Marie genoemd. Bij de Sint Michielsbaai zijn de flamingo’s helaas erg ver weg. Dus tenzij je een onwijze zoomlens of verrekijker bij je hebt, zijn je kansen beter in Sint Willibrordus. De zoutpannen liggen direct langs de weg. Het is goed te herkennen aan een bord en een uitkijktoren, en uiteraard aan de flamingo’s. Aan de overkant van de straat, bij de bushalte waar regelmatig mannen een spelletje domino spelen, kun je je auto prima parkeren.
Verblijf:
Scuba Lodge is het leukste en schatigste boetiek hotel op Curaçao en ook het meest fotogenieke hotel op het eiland. De kleurrijke huisjes waar het gebouw uit bestaat en de kamers met zee zicht maken je op slag verliefd. Het hotel bestaat uit appartementen, kamers sommige met een eigen kookgelegenheid en het hotel heeft een Infinity pool waar het goed vertoeven is. We vonden het geweldig om zo dicht bij Willemstad te verblijven maar binnen het hotel waan je je in een tropische tuin waar je gelijk Chill van wordt Meer
Avila beach hotel Avila heeft alles voor een geweldige strandvakantie met twee privé zandstranden, ruime kamers, fitnes met zeezicht, een buiten en binnen restaurant, een infinity pool hier kom je niets te kort, geen wonder dat de Oranjes hier ook graag verblijven. Restaurants Curaçao:
De Heeren @sea Dit sfeervolle restaurant ligt aan de zee, als je geluk hebt zit je helemaal vooraan bij het water. De kwaliteit van de keuken heeft ons bijzonder verrast. Je kan hier ook heel goed ontbijten als je bijvoorbeeld bij Scuba Lodge of in de buurt verblijft. Lekker met de beentjes in het zand de dag beginnen geweldig toch.
Mundo Bizarro Dit restaurantje is inmiddels een begrip geworden in de hoofdstraat in Pietermaai. Superleuk interieur, en behulpzame bediening. Veel keuze op de kaart.
Karakter Dit restaurant direct aan de zee is leuk om te lunchen en zeker ’s avonds superromantisch met alle fakkels en de sfeervolle verlichting op het strand, wij hebben hier het lekkerst gegeten tussen de middag.
De Gouverneur Een van de bekendste en beste restaurants in Willemstad. Hier kijk je vanaf het dakterras superleuk uit op de handelskade, het kanaal en de Queen Emma bridge.
Stranden:
Cas Abao ook wel Bon Bini Beach genoemd is een populair strand op Curaçao. Op dit heerlijke brede zandstrand kun je naast zwemmen en duiken ook sup boards en kano’s huren. Je kunt dus lekker actief bezig zijn én heerlijk zonnen. Daarnaast is er een leuk restaurant en een toiletgebouw met douches aanwezig. Toegang is tegen betaling
Porto Marie ligt direct naast Koraal Estate en Daaibooi. Je betaalt entree en voor het gebruik van een bedje, maar dit is dan ook direct voor het natuurbehoud in deze baai. Je kunt hier prachtig snorkelen, maar sinds kort lopen er ook een 5-tal biggetjes rond. Dus met een beetje geluk kun je hier net als in de Bahama’s zwemmen met biggetjes. Superleuk!
Grote Knip prachtig wit zandstrand en tevens het meest gefotografeerde strand op Curaçao. Omdat veel mensen vanaf de rotspartij links een selfie maken met het strand in de achtergrond.
Daai Booi Prachtig blauw water en een leuke mix van toeristen en locals.
Playa Kalki Prachtig zandstrand omgeven door kalkstenen klippen. Kalki is een van de mooiste plaatsen om te gaan snorkelen en te duiken. Een rustige plek vlakbij Westpunt. Recentelijk is het strand opgeknapt (zand opgespoten) en is er een trap naar het Kura Hulanda Lodge. In het restaurantje op het strand kan je eventueel lunchen.
Kokomo een mooi natuurlijk strandje met steiger. Parkeren is gratis. Je betaalt geen entree maar mag niet je eigen eten en drinken nuttigen. Dit strand is bekend van de grote full moon beachparty’s die er gegeven worden en de bekende schommel in het water.
Playa Lagun, klein mooi strandje met vissersbootje gelegen in een baaitje boven is nog een restaurantje waar je eventueel kan lunchen. We verbleven hier vaak ochtends een uurtje op het strand bijna helemaal alleen waarna we verder trokken naar de andere strandjes in de buurt.
Jan Thiel Parelwitte aangelegde stranden, gemaakt voor toerisme. Hier vind je veel luxe resorts en het stikt er van de Nederlanders. Fijn als je graag alle faciliteiten bij de hand hebt en keuze wilt hebben uit verschillende restaurants.
Mambo Beach het meest commerciële strand van het eiland, in eerste instantie deed het me denken aan de Spaanse Costa, hier kom je vooral om gezien te worden, te drinken en te dansen. Een superfijne plek om ‘s avonds met je voeten nog in de zee een biertje te drinken.
Te doen:
Uitzichtpunt Santa Martha waar je een geweldig uitzicht over de baai hebt. Om bij het uitzichtpunt van Santa Martha te komen, stel je de navigatie in op het dorpje Soto of Playa Lagun. Zodra je deze plekken nadert, zie je Santa Martha op de wegwijsborden verschijnen. Neem de aangegeven afslag en let vervolgens goed op, want het uitzichtpunt staat niet aangegeven. De plek ligt aan de rechterkant van de weg en is te herkennen aan de uitstekende rots waar bijna geen bebossing is. Parkeer je auto in de berm en geniet van het prachtige uitzicht over de Santa Martha Baai!
De Christoffelberg ligt in het westen van het eiland. Deze berg is 375 meter hoog en is daarmee het hoogste punt van Curaçao. Een klim naar de top is een populair uitstapje voor actievelingen. Eenmaal boven word je beloond met een fantastisch uitzicht over het eiland en de glinsterende zee. De tocht naar boven duurt zo’n 1 tot anderhalf uur, afhankelijk van je conditie en snelheid. Let op: de tocht bestaat niet alleen uit wandelen, maar ook uit klauteren. Tip begin morgens vroeg, na 10uur mag je vanwege de hitte niet meer starten aan de tocht
Snorkelen met schildpadden bij Playa Grandi De wat rustigere baaien in het Westen lenen zich het beste voor een snorkel sessie. Op het visser strandje Playa Grandi, hebben we geluk. Vissers brengen net een grote vangst binnen, maken het schoon en gooien het afval terug in de zee. Dichtbij het strand zwemmen op dat moment een stuk of 15 zeeschildpadden, sommige groter dan een meter.
Met de catamaran naar Klein Curaçao Tenzij je écht niet van varen houdt, vind ik dat je dit gedaan moet hebben als je op Curaçao bent. Niet eens per se om Klein Curaçao te zien ook helemaal geweldig maar vooral om de boottrip. De heenweg was nogal pittig was door de wind- en stroomrichting en sommigen werden zeeziek aan boord vanwege de ruige zee. Onderweg zagen we vooral vliegende vissen en is er voor de rest niet veel te beleven en duurt de tocht wel 2 uur bij storm weer. Na ongeveer twee uur varen kom je aan op Klein Curaçao, echt een paradijs. Zo mooi! We besloten om meteen te gaan snorkelen want hier zwemmen heel veel schildpadden. We hebben er echt mega veel gezien! Hele grote maar ook hele kleine schildpadden. Na een bezoek aan de vuurtoren en het oude scheepswrak wat 10 minuten lopen is gingen we lunchen en ging de bar open. Om 15:00 ga je weer terug en de terug weg is zoveel leuke omdat de bar open is natuurlijk en omdat het zoveel rustiger varen is. Een leuke dag maar je moet geen last van zeeziekte hebben, het water is echt kraakhelder en het strand super wit.
Verken Willemstad te voet Dat de stad een rijke geschiedenis heeft, merk je meteen zodra je de gekleurde koloniale huizen ziet en de forten aan weerszijden van de Sint Annabaai als je de hoge Koningin Julianabrug op rijdt. Bij de huizen op de Handelskade pronken op de gevels nog data uit 1708, kijk bijvoorbeeld eens naar het Penha winkelcentrum. Maar je kan daarnaast ook binnenlopen bij het historische Amsterdam fort waar op de zijkanten ook plakkaten zijn te vinden van het Nederlands Koningshuis. Willemstad staat vol gekleurde huizen, maar er zijn een aantal stukken waar je even de tijd voor moet nemen omdat ze net even mooier of unieker zijn:
1. Handelskade bij de Sint Annabaai, welbekend van promotie foto’s van Curaçao
2. Rif fort aan de kant van Otrabanda, een oud fort vanwaar je mooi uitzicht hebt
3. Fort Amsterdam, het geel gekleurde gebouw met mooie binnenplaats
4. Penha, een van de oudste winkels (1708) van Willemstad
5. Koningin Wilhelminapark, ook de plek waar je de ‘Dushi’ & ‘Curaçao’ letters vindt
6. Mikve Israël-Emanuel synagoge, een van de oudere synagoge met zand op de vloer
7. Lopen rondom Heerenstraat, Maduro straat, Kuiperstraat, Colombusstraat etc.
8. Waterfortstraat, hier kun je aan het water ook leuk iets drinken of eten

The island of Curaçao is best explored by car. Without a rental car, you will not get to the most beautiful places and bays, the Christoffelpark natural park, or the tropical beaches at Westpunt. A place where you almost always Flamingos is to spot St. Willibrord, near Character. Navigate to Landhuis Jan Kock. You can see flamingos in two places on Curaçao: at the Sint Michielsbaai and at the salt pans of Jan Kok, also known as the saliña of Rif-Sint Marie. The flamingos are unfortunately very far away at Sint Michielsbaai. So unless you have an unwise zoom lens or binoculars with you, your chances are better in Sint Willibrordus. The salt pans are right next to the road. It is easy to recognize by a sign and a watchtower, and of course the flamingos. On the other side of the street, at the bus stop where men regularly play a game of domino, you can park your car perfectly.

De Heeren @sea This attractive restaurant is located on the sea if you are lucky you will be at the very front by the water. We were particularly surprised by the quality of the kitchen. You can also have a very good breakfast here if, for example, you are staying at Scuba Lodge or nearby. Serve with the bones in the sand the day starts great anyway.
Mundo Bizarro This restaurant has become a household name in the main street in Pietermaai. Very nice interior and helpful service. Lots of choices on the menu.
Karakter This restaurant right on the sea is nice for lunch and especially in the evening super romantic with all the torches and the atmospheric lighting on the beach, we had the best meal here at lunchtime.
De Gouverneur One of the best known and best restaurants in Willemstad. Here you have a super nice view from the roof terrace on the trade quay, the canal, and the Queen Emma bridge.
Beaches
Cas Abao also called Bon Bini Beach is a popular beach on Curaçao. In addition to swimming and diving, you can also rent sup boards and canoes on this lovely wide sandy beach. So you can be active and sunbathe. There is also a nice restaurant and a toilet block with showers. Access is for a fee
Porto Marie is located right next to Koraal Estate and Daaibooi. You pay an entrance fee and for the use of a bed, but this is also directly for the conservation of nature in this bay. You can snorkel beautifully here, but recently there are also 5 piglets walking around. So with a little luck, you can swim with piglets here just like in the Bahamas. Awesome!

Daai Booi, I thought it was one of the most beautiful beaches. Beautiful blue water and a nice mix of tourists and locals.
Playa Kalki Beautiful sandy beach surrounded by limestone cliffs. Kalki is one of the most beautiful places to go snorkeling and diving. A quiet place near Westpunt. The beach has recently been refurbished (sand sprayed) and there are stairs to the Kura Hulanda Lodge. You can have lunch in the restaurant on the beach.
Kokomo a beautiful natural beach with a jetty. Parking is free. You do not pay an entrance fee, but you are not allowed to consume your food and drinks. This beach is known for the large full moon beach parties that are held there and the famous swing in the water.
Playa Lagun, a small beautiful beach with a fishing boat located in a bay above, is another restaurant where you can have lunch. We often stayed here for an hour on the beach in the morning, almost completely alone, after which we continued to the other beaches in the area.
Jan Thiel Pearly white landscaped beaches, made for tourism. Here you will find many luxury resorts and it is full of the Dutch. Great if you like to have all the facilities at hand and want to have a choice of different restaurants.
Mambo Beach the most commercial beach on the island, at first it reminded me of Lloret de Mar, where you mainly come to be seen, to drink, and to dance. A super nice place to drink a beer with your feet still in the sea in the evening.
To do:
Viewpoint Santa Martha where you have a great view over the bay. To get to the viewpoint of Santa Martha, set the navigation to the village of Soto or Playa Lagun. As soon as you approach these places, you will see Santa Martha appear on the signposts. Take the indicated exit and then pay close attention, because the viewpoint is not signposted. The spot is on the right side of the road and can be recognized by the protruding rock where there is almost no afforestation. Park your car on the roadside and enjoy the beautiful view over Santa Martha Bay!
The Christoffelberg is located in the west of the island. This mountain is 375 meters high, making it the highest point on Curaçao. A climb to the top is a popular outing for the active. Snorkeling with turtles at Playa Grandi The quieter bays in the West is best for a snorkeling session. We are lucky at the fisherman beach Playa Grandi. Fishermen just bring in a large catch, clean it up and throw it back into the sea. Near the beach at that time about 15 sea turtles swim, some larger than a meter.
With the catamaran to Klein Curaçao Unless you don't like sailing, I think you should have done this when you are on Curaçao. Not even absolutely great to see Klein Curaçao, but especially for the boat trip. The way there was quite tough due to the wind and current direction and some got seasick on board because of the rough sea. On the way, we mainly saw flying fish and otherwise, there is not much to do and the trip takes 2 hours in stormy weather. After about two hours of sailing, you will arrive at Klein Curaçao, a real paradise. So beautiful! We decided to go snorkeling immediately because a lot of turtles swim here. We have seen a lot of them! Very large but also very small turtles. After a visit to the lighthouse and the old shipwreck which is a 10-minute walk we went for lunch and the bar opened. At 15:00, you go back and the way back is so much fun because the bar is open of course and because it is so much quieter sailing. A nice day but you shouldn't suffer from seasickness, the water is really clear and the beach super white.
Stroll through Willemstad the city has a rich history, you notice immediately when you see the colored colonial houses and forts on both sides of St. Anna Bay as you ride the high Queen Juliana Bridge. The façades of the houses on the Handelskade still show dates from 1708, look at the Penha shopping center for example. But you can also walk into the historic Amsterdam fort where you can also find placards of the Dutch Royal Family on the sides.
